Coffee break reads

*In this post: one sanctification, and one salvation story, as well as a few poems to inpire you.*

Sanctification Story: Alissa

There was one thing that Alissa knew with intense certainty: she couldn't go on this way any longer. Everything was falling apart and she had no idea how to fix it.

The weird thing was, her days started out fine. She'd wake early, make herself a cup of coffee, and enjoy a good, long, quiet time, complete with Bible reading and prayer journalling. She'd sit in the soft, gentle stillness and just savour the peace. The problem was, it didn't last. As soon as she stood up, the demands of her day would assail her, and she never slowed down again until she fell exhausted into bed.

The quiet peacefulness of the morning always disapeared the way mist vanishes as the sun makes its appearance.

Alissa sighed and raised the volume on her phone so she could hear her podcast better. The boys were squabbling about something silly again. "Quiet down! I'm trying to listen!" Alissa knew they would ignore her. She really should go to their bedroom, but she was so tired.

Alissa focused on the podcast once more. Perhaps she'd find some encouragement in the message.

"And so, this godly woman would cover her head with her apron and pray. Her children knew that if their mother did this, that she as praying to her Lord." The presenter chuckled, then continued. "Susannah Wesley had nineteen children, so it couldn't have been easy, but she sure knew Who to go to for help throughout the day."

Alissa stood still. She forgot about the cup in her hands that she'd been drying. That's my problem. Of course! I have a long quiet time in the morning, then I leave Jesus in my peaceful corner, while I go do battle on my own.

She sat down slowly on a kitchen chair and bowed her head. She didn't have an apron, but that didn't matter. Jesus was waiting to hear her prayer for help.

Salvation Story: Lillian

Lillian pushed the small volume back into its slot on the shelf. What's with the odd title anyway? She thought. How could anyone claim to find God? There was no evidence for His existance anyway. She moved on to more familiar territory. Or, was  it safer territory? She ran her finger along the spines of a row of brightly coloured titles, before choosing one by a well known author. Perhaps a little romance would chase her gloomy thoughts away.

Lillian was in her late thirties, and so far, true love had remained the stuff of novels. She made her way towards the front desk, past the non-fiction section. The odd little book she'd rejected earlier, seemed to call her, and her fingers found it once more. She pulled it out and scanned the back cover. "A search for God ends in a surprising conclusion. Bring your own questions along on the author's quest."

Lillian checked the book out along with the romance. It couldn't hurt to read it. She'd read books about religion before, but this book seemed different: more personal somehow.

A mere two days later, Lillian closed the little volume. The romance she'd taken out had been pushed aside. Lillian sat for a long time, pondering all she'd read, then she opened the book once more, and began to read it again.

A love story like none other she'd ever read was warming all the lonely places in her soul and Jesus was calling her home.

Thank you for popping in. I do hope that you have been blessed and encouraged. I am currently writing a longer short story, which I will post soon, God willing. See you next time.

Ps. I have added captions to my Books/Links Page. You can now read a little info about each book before going over to Amazon.

Also, I am making some changes to the way I blog, and will be posting a quick post about that.

Love and prayers,

Alison.

The Conversation. A Free Short Story

The Conversation  Gavin was so absorbed in his book, that he barely noticed that the train had stopped at a station. "Mind if I sit here?" He looked up. A young woman with friendly freckles across her nose and wide brown eyes stood in the aisle. He nodded, then smiled faintly and she quickly stowed her large backpack. "I'm Sybil." The young woman offered. "Thanks." "No problem. Travelling to Barton?"  "Nope. It's Dunmore I'm headed for. You?" "Same." Gavin was cautious. He wasn't sure he felt like a chatty companion. He'd been looking forward to finishing his book. It had hooked him from the first chapter. But thankfully, Sybil didn't bubble on. She just smiled before taking her own book out.  Gavin went back to his reading, not without noticing that it was a Bible that Sybil had opened. Unusual.   Sybil glanced towards him. She liked to study people, and would often strike up a conversation in the ho...

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story Dear Readers, Here is a gift from me to you. "The Searching" is a story which has been puttering around in my heart for awhile. It nearly didn't get written though, as I was a bit unsure as to whether I could get it to work. But God is faithful, and He gave me both the inspiration and the words. There were a few times when I nearly gave up, but now, I'm so glad that I didn't. It's one of my favourites, and I hope that you enjoy it too.  *** Previous cover The Searching: A Novella *** By Alison Lawrence *** Copyright Copyright owner: Alison Lawrence. 2024 All rights reserved. Too Much. Thoughts of a Mom

Too Much Dear Reader, So often, I have felt this way: that I simply cannot make it. The burdens have grown too heavy. The pain is too great. The disappointment too crushing. It seems like every morning I take some time to feel very sorry for myself. No. I simply do not have the strength for anything. Perhaps staying in bed would be a good idea. But then, I remember. He has reminded me many times. "Give each load you carry to Me. Put it in a basket and float it on the Nile. Bring it to the strong tower. It will be safe with Me. Place it on the Rock which cannot move. Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross. Lay them in My arms." Yes, Lord. I will . "Good." And then another whisper: "Just one day, child. Just one step at a time." Yes, Lord, I can do that with You at my side, holding my hand. But Lord, what about tommorow? "Don't worry, child. We will do this again each morning. And you will make it. One day at a time." *** Matthew 11:28. ...
