Rosie's Story. Episode Six

"How about coming to my house for a sleep over on Saturday, Rosie? Our last one was in the holidays. Please say yes. It will be such fun." Pamela's pretty eyes pleaded. "I've got three movies to catch up on and they're too scary to watch alone. Besides," she giggled, "my brother Carl's friend Rob is going to be there."
"Rob?" Rosie's eyes widened. "He's dreamy." Her face fell though as Pamela pressed her for an answer. Pamela was her best friend, and she'd do anything to go to the sleep over. But she knew without a doubt that her mother would say no. Sleep overs were only allowed in the holidays, and it was all because of church. "I dont know, Pam. You know what my mom's like."
They were walking to art class, which was Rosie's favourite. Now she felt unusually gloomy as they entered the class. "Why not ask your dad?" Pamela suggested brightly. "He doesn't do church. I'm sure he'd  take your side."

Later, Rosie eaves-dropped from her room as her parents argued back and forth. The argument was all about the sleep over, so she figured she had a right to know what was being said. As she listened though, it seemed to be more about church. "Liam, you know how I feel about that. Church is important. Besides, you agreed that our children would go when we were married." Rosie heard her mother's calm yet insistant tone.
"Elizabeth, you know I would never stop you from going to church, neither would I prevent the girls; but they're older now. A little sleep over can't harm. Besides, they will have to make their own choices soon about whether to go to church or not."
Rosie's heart soared. Her father continued to speak in his calm, unruffled way and her mother grew quieter. After a short while, Rosie could hear nothing more. Perhaps they'd gone to bed. How Rosie wished she could know the outcome of the arguement right away! It would be awesome if Dad had won.

"So, can I go?" Rosie asked her father as they ate their cereal. She avoided looking at her mother's face. Oddly, she felt as though she'd betrayed her mother by following through on Pamela's suggestion.
"Yes. You may." Her father smiled. "But no age-restricted movies, OK? And you must come home at lunchtime on Sunday."
Rosie gave a little gasp of pleasure and Cherry's eyebrows rose. "Can I go to Lisa's house if Rosie's sleeping over at Pamela's place?"
"Sure, Cherry, just be back at lunch."
Both girls raced over to their father, all smiles and happy laughter.

It was only as she walked to the bus stop alongside Cherry, that Rosie realized that her mother had said nothing at all.

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story Dear Readers, Here is a gift from me to you. "The Searching" is a story which has been puttering around in my heart for awhile. It nearly didn't get written though, as I was a bit unsure as to whether I could get it to work. But God is faithful, and He gave me both the inspiration and the words. There were a few times when I nearly gave up, but now, I'm so glad that I didn't. It's one of my favourites, and I hope that you enjoy it too.  *** Previous cover The Searching: A Novella *** By Alison Lawrence *** Copyright Copyright owner: Alison Lawrence. 2024 All rights reserved.   Inspirational fiction  The Yearning: The Sequel to "The Searching." Copyright: Alison Lawrence 2024. All rights reserved. *** Dedication: To all who are yearning for so much more. *** Chapter One (Author's note: Han is pronounced Hun.) It was only six o'clock in the morning, but Lidda could already feel it was going to be an unpleasantly hot day. She emptied her basket of cabbage scraps into the chicken coop, looking around for Han as she did so. He and his brother Vinny would have finished milking by now. No doubt they’d be in for breakfast soon. Lidda allowed herself a small sigh. She wasn't one to complain, but sometimes, the burden of her workload and of being a young wife rested very heavily on her shoulders. She entered the cool kitchen once more, and stirred the obligatory porridge before starting on the eggs. Her mind drifted quite naturally to Tirsa. Where are you dear one? How I wish you'd come back to us. Lidda missed her quirky free-thinking sist...

Flash Fiction, A Poem, Garden Glimpses, & an Update

Flash Fiction, A Poem, Garden Glimpses, & an Update In this post: a mini inspirational story, a poem, plus what's up in my garden, and a blog and writing update . A sparrow, yet loved and counted. Photo: Ratanjot Singh.Unsplash. Little One The little one watches from her spot in the old apple tree. She peeks through the canopy of bright green leaves and ruby globes. She watches while resting in shady, cool, calm. She stares at the rushing, busy, blurry people. Where are they going? Why so rushed? People of all sizes and styles, yet all with the same harried, frazzled, furrowed frowns. She cocks her head, then fluffs her feathers: just a little sparrow, yet loved, fed, and counted. While people rush and worry, she lives, and breathes, and feeds, and flies; before she falls, and softly dies.  In Him. *** End of Self Now at end of self, decided: Give my all to You. Lay down each rock, and burden, sin: and start each day anew. *** Garden Glimpses January here in the southern...
