A Change Of Heart
A free love story by Alison Lawrence
Kelsey nearly over-mixed the muffin batter as her thoughts whirled along with the wooden spoon. One thought was short and to the point. What would Logan say?
Other thoughts followed soon behind. She'd been putting it off for so long. Putting him off. Was it too late?
The muffins, cappuccino and chocolate, a favourite of Logan's were a kind of peace offering. She'd only know whether they'd help at all when he came over later.
Kelsey focused for the moment on the task at hand, green eyes serious as she filled the muffin tray then placed it in the oven. Once that was done, she grabbed her phone and scanned it quickly. Just a quick note from Logan assuring her he'd be coming over. She sent a quick smiley face back, not wanting to over-do things. The compact kitchen was back to normal again in a few minutes. Kelsey scanned it, along with the rest of her apartment, before giving it a mental thumbs up. Then, leaving her phone on the counter, she made her way to the bedroom. It was time.

"Hi." Kelsey smiled.
Logan noticed the way her copper coloured hair seemed to glow in the soft evening light. "Hi, beautiful. Something smells delish."
Kelsey led him into the kitchen. It seemed like the safer option. She gestured to the plate on the counter. "Your favourite. Would you like some coffee to go with them?"
Logan grinned. "Sounds good." He packed away two muffins before the coffee was made, then shrugged sheepishly. "They're very good. You said you had something to say to me?" Logan reached out for Kelsey's hand as she sat on the bar stool beside him. Kelsey nodded, then bought a few moments of time as she looked into Logan's warm brown eyes. What would he say? "Yeah...." The feel of his hand in hers nearly made her go off track, but she knew she couldn't keep him hanging.
"Logan, you need to know something. It's only fair. And," she looked down at her coffee. "You might not be OK with it or with me when I tell you."
"You're pregnant, aren't you?" Logan's mug made a jarring noise as he put it down.
For a second, Kelsey wondered whether a pregnancy announcement would be easier than what she had to say. "No, Logan. I'm not pregnant. Although I would keep our baby if I was." Her voice softened. "I just wanted to tell you, I can't move in with you. I prayed today." Her bright eyes met his quite boldly, and she felt strength flow through her. "I gave my heart to Jesus today, Logan. I repented of my sin. I'm a follower of His now."
"You what?" The coffee in Logan's mouth tasted sour as he swallowed quickly.
"I gave my life to Jesus," Kelsey said slowly. "It's something I've been wanting to do for a while."
Logan breathed out slowly. At least Kelsey wasn't pregnant. "Well, you got some religion. That's OK. I can handle that." His chuckle sounded nervous. "So long as you don't try converting me." He drew her closer. "It's no big deal. So, when are you moving in? My flat is much bigger than yours."
Kelsey didn't know much about being a Christian, but she prayed in her heart, "Lord, please help me know what to say." She closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them, she looked at Logan as though for the first time. The man she loved. She'd given everything to him; and now she was taking it all away. And she hurt for him. For herself. She wrapped her arms around him. Another peace offering. "I love you, Logan, but I can't move in with you without being married. It wouldn't be right. Can you give me some time?"
He held her close and kissed her as though he was going on a long journey. "I don't understand, Kelsey, but I'll give you some time." His eyes had lost their glow, but he gave a little smile. "I guess I know what it feels like to be jealous of God."
Kelsey shook her head. She could hardly see through her tears. "No, Logan, don't be jealous of God. He loves you, and wants you to be His too."
Logan just smiled sadly, before grabbing a couple of muffins for the road.

Some questions to think about:
1) How does the story help you to see that making a decision to give your life to Jesus is not something to be taken lightly?
1b)God's Word teaches us that living together before marriage is a sin. Read the following passages: Genesis 2:24, John 4,
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, and
1 Corinthians 6:18. Can you see that God's good and perfect plan involves marriage, and that sexual immorality is a sin? Would you say that Kelsey was convicted of her sin, and that that was why she couldn't move in with Logan?
2) What is Logan's first priority? Do you think he would offer to marry Kelsey?
3) What would you do if you were Kelsey?
4) What do you think Kelsey will do for Logan now that they are separated and she is a Christian?
5) Is there hope for Logan?
6) Would you do what Kelsey did, knowing that you could lose your boyfriend, but gain salvation and an eternity with Jesus?
7) He loves you so much. Will you think about His invitation?
