Salvation Stories: Bree

"You're moving where? That's the most stupid thing you've done so far! What about us? Is this it then?"

Bree squished her eyes shut in an effort to shut off the recent and painful exchange.

Dane had been livid. But, he wasn't going to get his way this time. Tears forced their way through her eyelids. All she'd ever wanted was to be Dane's forever girl. She'd given him everything in the hopes of making that dream come true, but even she had her limits. Her pride.

She'd forgiven him and taken him back the first time, and then the second. Why, she could hardly fathom. What was wrong with her? When Dane had taken a third girl into his arms, Bree had finally woken up. He would never change. And her trust was utterly broken.

Bree grabbed another box, and stuffed some random papers and books into it. Her movements were wooden. Robotic. Until she touched The Book. Her grandmother's book.

Her glare melted into a smile, albeit a sad one. She peeped into its pages, but she didn't feel like she had the strength for more than that. Maybe once she'd settled into her new home: the country town of Langston.

But The Book pulled at her with a strange magnetism, and before long, she found herself nestled in the armchair, The Book on her lap.

There were many notes and underlinings. "I am the way, and the truth, and the life." Bree read, and in the margin, in red ink, "Jesus is the Way!"

She could almost hear her grandmother's cheerful voice as she'd baked bread and sweet treats. "Bree dear, never forget. Jesus is the solution."

Bree sat for many minutes turning fragile pages and remembering. Her gran's solution tugged strongly at her torn heart.

She read a few more underlined sections before placing the precious book inside her handbag. She was going to need it as she began her new life.

John 14:1-7 ESV

[1] “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. [2] In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? [3] And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. [4] And you know the way to where I am going.” [5] Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” [6] Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. [7] If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
