The Waiting Room. Episode Five: Katya and Jonah

In a lull during the busy supper time rush, Tara opened the dishwasher. Her friend and fellow waitress, Katya, began loading it with glasses, and flatware.
"Why not come with me tonight?" Tara asked brightly. "You've always been interested in the spiritual side of things." Tara knew it was highly unlikely that Katya would agree to go to the End-Time meetings, and would be very surprised if she said yes. She had in fact surprised herself by accepting her mother's invitation to the church meetings.
Katya closed the dishwasher door firmly. "No thank you. I'll go to just about anything except a Christian meeting. Narrow minded people are not my thing, and you know it. Why are you going, anyway? I thought you walked away from the church ages ago."
Tara looked over at her customers before answering. They all seemed happy enough. "I guess I started thinking again. You know, the world's really upside down right now. It would be nice to have some answers. I started reading my Bible again too, and it's making sense."
Katya's blonde bob bounced as she shook her head vehemently. "You're nuts, Tara. Why go backwards? But I guess it's your bad." She shook her head once more before heading off to her section.
Tara shrugged then began clearing a vacated table. She really hadn't expected Katya to be interested.

"Here, let me take that. I'm headed for the kitchen anyways." Jonah appeared at her side, his usual upbeat self. After Katya's sharp words, it felt like a breath of fresh air. "Thanks Jonah, I'll grab the chance to check on number five."
"No problem. Say, what was Katya letting off steam about?"
"I'll fill you in later." Tara grinned.
As she worked her tables, she couldn't help wondering whether Jonah would be interested in the rejected invitation.

After the shift, as they collected their backpacks and jackets, Tara took a few minutes to tell Jonah about the cause of Katya's bad mood.
"They're End-Times meetings. You know, prophecy and all that. But what the guy's been talking about makes sense when you see what's going on in the world."
"Sounds interesting." Jonah held the restaurant door open for her as they walked out. "I've always wondered whether something like Armageddon could actually happen."
"Why not come tomorrow night? You're off aren't you?"
"Sounds like a plan." He smiled. "And something you're going to can't be as bad as what Katya was making out."
"Great! I'll whatsapp you the time and address." Tara smiled, and Jonah's deep brown eyes smiled back. "See you there."

The Conversation. A Free Short Story

The Conversation  Gavin was so absorbed in his book, that he barely noticed that the train had stopped at a station. "Mind if I sit here?" He looked up. A young woman with friendly freckles across her nose and wide brown eyes stood in the aisle. He nodded, then smiled faintly and she quickly stowed her large backpack. "I'm Sybil." The young woman offered. "Thanks." "No problem. Travelling to Barton?"  "Nope. It's Dunmore I'm headed for. You?" "Same." Gavin was cautious. He wasn't sure he felt like a chatty companion. He'd been looking forward to finishing his book. It had hooked him from the first chapter. But thankfully, Sybil didn't bubble on. She just smiled before taking her own book out.  Gavin went back to his reading, not without noticing that it was a Bible that Sybil had opened. Unusual.   Sybil glanced towards him. She liked to study people, and would often strike up a conversation in the ho...

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story

The Searching: A Free Inspirational Story Dear Readers, Here is a gift from me to you. "The Searching" is a story which has been puttering around in my heart for awhile. It nearly didn't get written though, as I was a bit unsure as to whether I could get it to work. But God is faithful, and He gave me both the inspiration and the words. There were a few times when I nearly gave up, but now, I'm so glad that I didn't. It's one of my favourites, and I hope that you enjoy it too.  *** Previous cover The Searching: A Novella *** By Alison Lawrence *** Copyright Copyright owner: Alison Lawrence. 2024 All rights reserved. Too Much. Thoughts of a Mom

Too Much Dear Reader, So often, I have felt this way: that I simply cannot make it. The burdens have grown too heavy. The pain is too great. The disappointment too crushing. It seems like every morning I take some time to feel very sorry for myself. No. I simply do not have the strength for anything. Perhaps staying in bed would be a good idea. But then, I remember. He has reminded me many times. "Give each load you carry to Me. Put it in a basket and float it on the Nile. Bring it to the strong tower. It will be safe with Me. Place it on the Rock which cannot move. Lay your burdens at the foot of the cross. Lay them in My arms." Yes, Lord. I will . "Good." And then another whisper: "Just one day, child. Just one step at a time." Yes, Lord, I can do that with You at my side, holding my hand. But Lord, what about tommorow? "Don't worry, child. We will do this again each morning. And you will make it. One day at a time." *** Matthew 11:28. ...
